Crick Boat Show 2011

Another new event for us this year was the 3-day Crick Boat Show in Northamptonshire, and it proved to be an enjoyable, if rather damp, time.

The good old British weather arranged for Bank Holiday Monday to be a continuous downpour all day but the boating fraternity are a hardy lot and certainly don’t let a bit of water put them off having a good day out! There were more than a hundred brightly painted, beautifully decorated boats in the marina and along the canal, some vying for the title ‘Best Boat in Show’ and others simply performing their role of being a ‘home from home’.

There was plenty for all the family to see and do at the Show – technical stands and seminars dealing with the construction and maintenance of narrowboats, cookery demonstrations using food that could be foraged along the canal and, for the children, lots of entertainments and activities, plus the chance to meet Peppa Pig in person (our John was positively bursting with excitement at the prospect!)

Entertainment to lift soggy spirits was provided throughout the day and in the evenings from jazz bands, comedians and singers performing both in the central plaza area and also in the real ale beer tent – which was thoughtfully positioned right next to our stand!

Saturday and Sunday were mostly fine and dry, and scooter lettings were brisk on both those days.  As always, our scooters helped a variety of people, including a very jolly Dutchman who was grateful for the single-hand controlled scooter we provided, since a stroke has left him unable to use his right hand.  Another memorable customer was the gentleman in his 80’s who is still boat building despite his years and disabilities, and who didn’t let a minor fall on arrival stop him from enjoying the day.  We meet so many enthusiastic and inspiring people in this job, it’s a pleasure to be of service to them.

There were one or two problems regarding disabled parking and also scooter/wheelchair access into some of the marquees, which can be easily remedied next year.  In the main, however, it seemed a very well organised show and a grand day out for any family, boat-dwellers or not. We hope to be invited to put on our service at Crick Boat Show again in 2012.
